Self-hosted · Open source · No ads

Your news. Your rules. No noise.

NewsNest brings together the RSS feeds you choose, folds the same story from different outlets into one card, and uses AI (Anthropic's Claude) to rank and summarise it by your interests. No ads, no tracking, and it runs on your own machine.

Why NewsNest

Keeping up with the news shouldn't be a second job.
NewsNest does the sorting, so you can just read.

  1. 01

    You're in control

Your sources, your interests, your mute list. Nothing changes without your OK.

  2. 02

    Less bloat

Five outlets, one story, one card. The feed ends when you've seen what matters.

  3. 03

    Relevant to you

AI scores every story against your interests, and tells you why.

  4. 04

    No ads

No ads, no sponsored posts, no engagement tricks. Clickbait sinks to the bottom.

  5. 05

    Private

One SQLite file on your own server. No telemetry, no trackers.

Features

A calm feed that does the sorting for you.

01You're in control

You set the rules

Your feed does what you tell it.

Mute words you never want to see, make others always show up, and cap how many stories a noisy outlet gets each day. Your interests are a plain file you can read and edit.

  • Always showheat pumps

  • Max 8 a dayWire Desk

Your own sources

Any feed you like. Try new ones on trial.

Any RSS or Atom feed, plus GitHub release feeds for software you run. Import an OPML file and its feeds go on trial: you only see their best few stories a day, and the ones you actually read are suggested as regular sources.

Likes, dislikes and opens shift what you see. The weekly suggestions for your interests wait for your OK before they apply.

A hard spending cap

AI calls stop for the day when your budget is reached. Without an API key everything still works, with stories shown newest first.

02Less bloat

One story, not five

Same event, one card.

Coverage from several outlets folds into a single card, and wide coverage lifts a story up. When you've seen what matters, the feed tells you you're done.

The gist, and whether to read on.

Top stories come with a one-line lede, a few bullets, a “why this matters to you” line, and a hint whether the full article is worth your time. For anything else, tap Get key points.

04No ads

No ads, no clickbait

Nothing in your feed is paid to be there.

NewsNest has no ads, no sponsored posts and nothing tuned for engagement. Advertorials, clickbait and promo pages score low and sink, and key points give you the gist before you open the publisher's page.

05Private

Installable and private

A phone app, served from your home.

A mobile-first web app with light and dark themes that installs to your home screen. Password-protected, with a one-click database backup. What leaves your server

And more
  • Full-text search, saved stories, a read history and a day-by-day archive
  • Summaries in the language of your choice
  • A status page and a /health endpoint that report feeds that fail or go quiet

How it works

A 60-second loop, from feed to front page.

It fetches the sources that are due, scores new stories in batches, and writes key points for the ones above your threshold.

  1. 01

    Fetch

RSS, Atom and GitHub releases, de-duplicated by URL.

  2. 02

    Group

The same story across outlets becomes one.

  3. 03

    Score

Claude rates topic · importance · fit.

  4. 04

    Rank

Score × freshness × what you like.

  5. 05

    Your feed

Likes, opens and ratings flow back into the ranking.

Every batch

A small, cheap model with prompt caching does the scoring.

Rarely

A stronger model drafts your profile and the weekly suggestions.

Your call

Both models are set in config.yaml.

Privacy

What leaves your server, and what doesn't.

Stays on your machine

  • Your feed list and the database: one SQLite file
  • Your reading history, saved stories and likes
  • No ads and no trackers in the app
  • No telemetry. NewsNest phones home to no one.

Goes to the Anthropic API, with your key

  • Headlines and snippets, with your interests file and your country and city, for scoring
  • Article text, for key points
  • Headlines you've rated, for drafting your interests and the weekly suggestions
  • Links you paste into Missed this

No key? Then nothing goes to Anthropic at all, and the feed shows newest first.

Quick start

Up and running in five lines.

You need Docker with Compose and, for the AI features, an Anthropic API key.

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Lucifix/newsnest/main/.env.example -o .env # set NEWSNEST_PASSWORD and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY

    Add local news

Pick the pack for your country, or add your own local feeds.

  3. 3

    Rate about 30 headlines

NewsNest drafts your interests from them. That's the setup.

Open http://localhost:3095, log in with your password, and tap Set up my profile. The login is a single shared password, so put NewsNest behind an HTTPS reverse proxy before you expose it to the internet.

This pulls the published image for amd64 and arm64, so a Raspberry Pi works too: ghcr.io/lucifix/newsnest or lucifix/newsnest on Docker Hub. For a Portainer stack, or to build from source, see the README.
